Brett is Southpoint’s founding minister, and has served in ministries starting in Ohio and Indiana since 1984. His degrees in Bible, Ministry and Theology (B.A., M.A., M.Div.) come from Cincinnati Christian University. In Indianapolis, Brett worked as a Christian radio announcer, met his wife, Penny, in their church youth group (also a CCU graduate and a Southpoint Administrative Assistant), and married in 1985. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve & Kelly, and Thomas.

Mark Essick

Mark was born in King, North Carolina and grew up on pop tarts & sweet tea. He graduated from Kentucky Christian University in 1999 where he met his wife, Cindy. Cindy and Mark have 2 boys, Curran & Gage, and 1 girl, Aidan. They served in churches in both Kentucky & North Carolina, then came to Southpoint in 2006. They are both passionate about growing healthy families and training/sending kids and adults to go share the gospel all over Downriver & the world.

Kenny was born in Ann Arbor, and grew up in the town of Grass Lake. Ken came to Southpoint in 2008, started teaching, became a Deacon, and eventually an Elder. He is married to the most amazing woman in the world. "God truly did give me the desire of my heart when it comes to my amazing wife Kris. We have 4 children: Erica, Kyle, Courtney, and Jacob, and one grandson Vinny. For the record...yes, I am truly a Harley-riding, gun-totin’ Christ-loving Redneck."

Rich was born in Lapeer. He proudly served in the Marine Corps and has spent the majority of his life in aviation and running a chain of Martial Arts schools. He has five children: Courtney, Megan, Kelly, Rebecca, Elise; and an incredible wife, Stacy, who also serves at Southpoint as the Kids Minister. Rich and his family came to Southpoint in 2001.

Central Operations Minister

Trent was born and raised in the mid-Michigan area. He has a Bachelors in Automotive Management from Ferris State University and a certificate in Bible from Moody Theological Seminary. Trent started serving in ministry full-time in 2005 and has been serving at Southpoint since 2010. He has been married to his wife, Sarah, since 2008 and they have a son named Evan and a daughter named Taya.

Greg grew up in Newport, Michigan playing sports, riding his 3-wheeler, and hanging out with friends. He gave his life to the Lord in 1998, met the love of his life, Cindy, at Southpoint in 1999, then married her six months later. They have three kids: Ryan, Alyssa, and Joe. Greg seeks to serve God with all his heart and to share the love of Christ with everyone! He also enjoys going to football games with his family and watching movies with his wife.

Favorite Scripture: "Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’" John 14:6

Cindy grew up in Lincoln Park and started attending Southpoint in 1994 after seeing an ad in the yellow pages that said, “Come as you are!” She met her amazing husband, Greg, at Southpoint and married in 2000. Cindy has three kids: Ryan, Alyssa, and Joe, and a daughter-in-law: Emma. She came on staff in 2005 after working in the legal field for 17 years. Cindy relaxes by watching movies and loves to collect vinyl records. She loves to spend time helping women learn how to overcome their past by growing closer to Jesus.

One of Cindy‘s favorite Scriptures is: “Don’t be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2

Matt is a pastor’s kid who grew up in British Columbia (Canada), and Seattle, Washington. He moved to Lansing, Michigan in 2012 to attend Great Lakes Christian College and major in Biblical Studies. He has served in Youth Ministry most of his life and is so excited to bring the Gospel to the students of Downriver! His favorite activities are playing guitar, hanging out with his friends, dancing in the moonlight, watching The Office or Parks and Rec, and hiking. His favorite bible verse is John 16:33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Stacy has been attending Southpoint since 2001 with her husband, Rich, their five kids, and one granddaughter. She worked as an elementary teacher in the Gibraltar Schools for 15 years. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Education from Western Michigan University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wayne State University. Stacy enjoyed serving on the Praise Team as her kids were growing and now she is pleased that God has lead her to lead the Kids Ministry full time since 2013.

Jason Deese

Creative Arts Minister

Jason is a Jesus-loving, worship-leading, Bible-preaching guy who was born and raised in Monroe, North Carolina. He has a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Jason’s ministry journey has taken him across the country, from North Carolina to Florida to Las Vegas, where he served as a youth pastor, worship pastor, and now he serves as the Creative Arts Minister, here at Southpoint since 2011.

His mission in life is to help people connect with God, as well as to be a great husband to his wife, Beth, and father to his daughter, Annabelle.

Tyler Hanson

Tyler was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. After graduating from Vanguard University in 2007, Tyler felt a real calling to ministry and moved his family to Michigan to win Downriver for Christ! He and his beautiful wife, Stephanie, have a boisterous son named Ryker, and a precious daughter named Melody.

Interesting things about Tyler:
- He can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than 2 minutes.
- He can croon like Frank Sinatra

Ryan Horne

Ryan comes from the Downriver area and has been at Southpoint since 1994 and has grown up with the church. He married his wife, Emma, in 2016. He has an Associate of Arts in Communications & Graphic Design from Specs Howard School of Media Arts, and would love to talk to you about faith, music and Apple products.

Ryan’s favorite verse is Psalm 13:5-6: "But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me."

Ben Spencer

Ben was born in Texas but raised in Kansas, with his 7 other siblings. When he graduated High School, he returned to Texas where he served in a ministry for 5 years. Lucky for him, he met a Michigan gal there named Amy. They dated long distance for a few years then got married and served in youth ministry in Virginia. In 2012, Ben and Amy moved back to Michigan to be closer to family, and that’s when they made Southpoint their home church. Ben loves to write songs, play his guitar and sing, play basketball, and hang out with family and friends. Ben and Amy have two sweet daughters named Moriah and Selah.

Jessica is a life-long Michigander - raised in mid-Michigan, and attending Michigan Tech in the beautiful Upper Peninsula. By the time she moved Downriver to work in the auto industry, she had a degree in Mechanical Engineering, a man’s attention (who is now her husband Chad), and a heart for God. She found Southpoint in 2006, started volunteering in the office in 2008, hired on as part-time staff in 2011, and has held her current title and responsibilities since June 2014. When not around Southpoint, Jessica likes to spend time outdoors and cooking from scratch in her kitchen.
